La nostra scuola ha sempre partecipato al progetto di intercultura e quest’anno ospita una ragazza canadese che starà da noi per tutto l’anno scolastico. Approfittando di quest’occasione per conoscere un nuovo modo di vivere, abbiamo deciso di intervistarla e, poiché l’inglese è la sua lingua madre ed è studiato regolarmente anche da noi, abbiamo voluto pubblicare l’intervista in entrambe le lingue-

First of all, what’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Seaira Constable and I’m from the west side of Canada, near Vancouver.

What are some differences between the lifestyle there and here?
In Canada everything is more spacious than in Italy. I find it very busy: the cities are smaller and there are a lot more people than where I live.

How is the educational system organized in Canada?
We don’t have different schools: obviously there are private and public schools but all have the same subjects: it’s up to you to choose what you want to do. Every year is split into two terms and you have to get to choose four courses for each term so by the end of the year you will have done eight subjects. There are also French schools, for the ones who want to study French, and some religious schools but the majority od population goes to public schools.

Have you ever studied Italian before?
No, so everything was new when I came here.

How did you manage with the language problem?
The first two months (September and October) were very difficult for me to understand what people try to say to me but especially to actually speak. Italian is much more difficult than English but since the end od October I’ve been studyng to pick it up a lot more so now I understand more than I did even a month ago: I try to learn fast.

Why did you choose Italy? Was it your first choice?
I had to choose four Countries where I wanted to go and I chose Spain, Italy, Hungary and Switzerland and I got Italy. I was really happy with that, even if it was my second choice.

Why did you want to go to Spain?
Because of the weather: it’s very hot there (and also here) while where I live, in Canada, it’s always cold.

How does Italy seem to you? Is it like you expected it?
I think yes: I expected the injustices and the difficulties of the language. I also kew italians are very outgoing, loud, ecc. so, in general, I can say it’s like I expected it and it’s pretty nice.

How did you feel when you arrived here?
At first I was very excited because it was all new, great and fun. Then you start to really immerge yourself in an other culture and you truly understand how people live in a differentnpart of the world.

Would you come to Italy again or would you recommend it to a friend for a trip?
Yes, when I finish my exchange year I will go back to Canada and finish high school but I will come back to travel more around Italy because I like it so much.

Do you feel homesick?
Yes, I miss my family and friends but not to the point that I cry everyday. For Canada itself there are few aspects that I miss like the organization, the educational systm, the streeets or the places that are bigger so there is more space for inhabitants. Italy is busier and smaller.

Are there some differences between the people there and here?
Yes, Italians are very outgoing, talkative and loud while generally speaking Canadians are quieter. An other difference is thst in Canada friendships aren’t so much closer than in Italy because you, guys, have known each other from a young age while in Canada people meet new friends all the time so they give up old friendships more easily.

Do you prefer the people there or here?
Here because Italians are very close and nice and I just like them.

How did you decide to live in an other Country alone for one year?
It was actually kind of crazy: one day I was just walking through the school and there was a big table with exchange students with flyers and other things so I just stuck thinking “it would be very cool to know a new language and travel”. I’ve never been outside of Canada before so this is my first time abroad. Italy is pretty much far from my Country but you gotta experience, you have to travel also for personal growth.

And what did your mother say?
My mum supports me a lot, she is really happy that I’m here. Obviously she was worried but she also knew that I was gonna live in a safe family, in a safe school, with people who would make me feel at home.

Has the separation been traumatic?
No because I was already very indipendent so it didn’t hurt as much as maybe other students.

What are the differences between your family and the family that now host you?
Back home I just had my mum, I live with her: no siblings or a father so just me and my mum and, as you can imagine, it was a lot more quieter. My mother often was at work so it’s also for this reason that I grew up independent. The family that now host me is composed of a father, a mother and two “sisters” and I feel really good with them.

Didn’t you feel lonely at home only you and your mother?
A little infact I always wanted a brother and now it’s really nice to have people around me.

Are there things that you used to do when you were in Canada that you can’t do here?
I used to do school sports that you don’t have or programmes or clubs. I used to be involved in a lot of clubs in Canada, for example art and theatre clubs and also some sports.

I know these clubs are very common in Canada
Yes, especiallly theatre, exactly like in the movies. I was really involved in it because I like acting very much.

Are there some French people where you live?
No, there are only French people in Quebec. A lot of people get the wrong idea that Canada is both French and English so everyone speaks two languages when they only speak French in Quebec.

In your opinion, why is an intercultural experience important for a student?
Because I believe that the immersion in an other culture makes you learning a lot of new things. Much more than what you can learn by studyng that language at school. It’s also personal growth, you can do new experiences and see how people live in a completely different way from you.

Would you recommend it to someone you know?
Yes, definitely. I think it’s a lifechanging experience.

The year has just begun but are you proud of your choice?
Yes, I have a good feeling like it’s gonna be a good year and things gonna be good too. I will stay here for nine months: from September to the end of June or July and I hope I will enjoy my stay.

Prima di tutto, come ti chiami e da dove vieni?
Mi chiamo Seaira Constable e vengo dalla parte ovest del Canada, vicino Vancouver.

Quali sono alcune differenze fra lo stile di vita lì e qui?
In Canada tutto è più spazioso. Trovo l’Italia molto affollata: le città sono più piccole e c’è molta più gente rispetto a dove vivo io.

Com’è organizzato il sistema scolastico in Canada?
Noi non abbiamo diverse scuole (come classico, scientifico, linguistico, scienze umane, ecc): ovviamente ci sono scuole private e pubbliche ma tutte hanno le stesse materie: sei tu a scegliere quali vuoi fare. Ogni anno è diviso in due parti e tu devi scegliere quattro corsi per ogni semestre così, al termine dell’anno, avrai seguito otto materie. Ci sono anche scuole francesi, per quelli che vogliono studiare il francese, e alcune religiose ma la maggior parte della popolazione frequenta quelle pubbliche.

Avevi mai studiato italiano prima?
No, perciò tutto era nuovo quando sono arrivata qui.

Come hai affrontato il problema della lingua?
Durante i primi due mesi (Settembre e Ottobre) era molto difficile per me capire ciò che la gente cercava di dirmi ma soprattutto parlare. L’italiano è molto più difficile dell’inglese ma, dalla fine di Ottobre, ho studiato molto di più per impararlo meglio e ora capisco molte più cose di quante ne capivo solo un mese fa: cerco di imparare velocemente.

Perché hai scelto l’Italia? E’ stata la tua prima scelta?
Dovevo scegliere quattro Paesi dove mi sarebbe piaciuto andare e io ho scelto la Spagna, l’Italia, l’Ungheria e la Svizzera e ho ottenuto l’Italia. Ero molto felice di ciò, anche se era la mia seconda scelta.

Perché volevi andare in Spagna?
Per il tempo: lì (e anche qui) è molto caldo mentre dove vivo io, in Canada, fa sempre freddo.

Come ti sembra l’Italia? E’ come te l’aspettavi?
Penso di sì: mi aspettavo già le ingiustizie e le difficoltà della lingua. Sapevo anche che gli Italiani sono molto estroversi, rumorosi, ecc. Quindi, in generale, posso dire che è come me l’aspettavo e molto bella.

Come ti sei sentita quando sei arrivata qui?
All’inizio ero molto eccitata perché era tutto nuovo, bellissimo e divertente. Poi inizi a immergerti veramente in un’ altra cultura e capisci veramente come vive la gente in un’altra parte del mondo.

Verrai di nuovo in Italia o la consiglieresti a qualche tuo amico per un viaggio?
Sì, quando finirò il mio anno interculturale tornerò in Canada per finire la scuola superiore ma verrò di nuovo per viaggiare di più in tutta l’Italia perché mi sta piacendo molto.

Hai nostalgia di casa?
Sì, mi manca la mia famiglia e i miei amici ma non al punto da piangere ogni giorno. Per quanto riguarda il Canada stesso ci sono alcuni aspetti che mi mancano come l’organizzazione, il sistema scolastico, le strade o i luoghi che sono più spaziosi così gli abitanti possono usufruire di più spazio. L’Italia è più piccola e affollata.

Ci sono alcune differenze fra le persone lì e qui?
Si, gli Italiani sono molto estroversi, parlano molto e sono rumorosi mentre, parlando in generale, i Canadesi sono più silenziosi. Un’altra differenza è che in Canada le amicizie non sono così strette come qui perché voi ragazzi vi conoscete da quando siete bambini mentre in Canada la gente fa continuamente nuove amicizie perciò abbandonano le vecchie più facilmente.

Preferisci la gente lì o qui?
Qui perché gli Italiani sono molto confidenziali e simpatici e mi piacciono.

Come hai deciso di vivere in un altro Stato per un anno?
E’ stato qualcosa di assurdo: un giorno stavo camminando a scuola e c’era un grande tavolo di studenti stranieri con volantini e altre cose così mi sono fermata e ho pensato “sarebbe bello conoscere una nuova lingua e viaggiare”. Non ero mai stata fuori dal Canada prima, perciò questa è la mia prima volta all’estero. L’Italia è molto distante dal Canada ma secondo me dovresti sperimentarlo, dovresti viaggiare, anche per una crescita personale.

E cosa ha detto tua madre?
Mia madre mi ha supportata molto, è molto felice che io sia qui. Ovviamente era preoccupata ma sapeva anche che avrei vissuto al sicuro in una famiglia, in una scuola sicura, con persone che mi avrebbero fatto sentire a casa.

La separazione è stata traumatica?
No perché ero già molto indipendente perciò non mi ha fatto tanto male quanto magari potrebbe fare ad altri studenti.

Quali sono le differenze fra la tua famiglia e quella che ti ospita adesso?
A casa avevo solo mia mamma, vivo con lei: niente fratelli o un padre quindi solo io e lei e, come puoi immaginare, c’era molto più silenzio. Mia madre era spesso a lavoro ed è anche per questo motivo che sono cresciuta indipendente. La famiglia che mi ospita ora invece è composta da un padre, una madre e due “sorelle” e mi trovo molto bene con loro.

Non ti sentivi sola a casa solo tu e tua madre?
Un po’, infatti ho sempre voluto un fratello e ora è bello avere gente intorno a me.

Ci sono cose che eri solita fare in Canada ma che adesso non fai più qui?
Facevo gli sport della scuola, che qui voi non avete, o programmi o clubs. Facevo parte di tanti clubs in Canada, per esempio quello di arte e di teatro e anche vari sport.

So che questi clubs sono molto comuni in Canada.
Si, specialmente quello di teatro, proprio come nei film. Ne facevo parte molto attivamente perché mi piace molto recitare.

Ci sono Francesi dove vivi tu?
No, i Francesi sono solo nel Quebec. Molte persone hanno l’idea sbagliata che il Canada sia Francese e Inglese e che quindi ognuno parli due lingue ma in realtà si parla Francese solo nel Quebec.

Secondo te, perché un’esperienza interculturale è importante per uno studente?
Perché credo che l’immersione in un’altra cultura ti faccia imparare tantissime cose nuove. Molto più di quanto impareresti studiando la lingua a scuola. E’ anche una crescita personale, puoi fare nuove esperienze e vedere come vive la gente in modo completamente diverso da te.

La consiglieresti a qualcuno che conosci?
Assolutamente sì. Penso che sia un’esperienza che ti cambi la vita.

L’anno è appena iniziato ma sei soddisfatta della tua scelta?
Sì, ho un buon presentimento, come se questo sarà un bell’anno e le cose andranno bene. Starò qui per nove mesi: da Settembre fino alla fine di Giugno o Luglio e spero di apprezzare la mia permanenza.
